In common with all funeral directors we have a duty to every bereaved family to provide a funeral for the person that has died which is in line with their requirements, as well as a commitment to help and support every family through what is a stressful and traumatic time.
We are not required, nor do we, investigate the background of people we are asked to carry out a funeral for and neither are families required to brief us on anything other that the arrangements they would like carried out.
Nor is it appropriate for us to make moral judgements about any of our clients. It is a legal requirement for every person who dies in the UK to be properly disposed of – whether that is through a full funeral service or simple direct cremation or burial – and for us to refuse to do so would be a dereliction of duty.
The version of events as portrayed by Mrs Garner is inaccurate. She was asked to polish a coffin and she did so. The reasons for her dismissal do not relate to this incident. It would not be appropriate to divulge confidential employment records however what Mrs Garner has said is inaccurate, unfair and highly damaging and so we are taking legal advice to address this.
We would like to reassure our clients that McCallum & Tritton remains both a dedicated funeral firm and a responsible employer. We are proud of having provided a service to the local community for over half a century and hope the many families we have supported will see this incident for what it really is.
